Tom Hubbell - Artist
Statement
Extrude – verb – to force material
through a die in order to make multiple identical forms. Industrial uses include,
tile, pipe, bricks.
I’ve been involved with extruding clay for several
years now. Originally,
I found it useful for quick reproductions of hard-edged forms. Now, however, I find it a
way to give movement and rhythm to the pieces, when manipulated and
combined with thrown forms such as lids and spouts.
Current variations deal with different firing
processes such as wood, gas and salt. Many thanks to Omaha
Clay Works for allowing me access to the anagama wood kiln and to
Tony Winchester for space in his new salt kiln.
