Her artwork, functional and rooted in tradition. As a folklorist, she has documented cultural traditions that move across time and distance, evolving to fit new lives and needs, even while they keep alive the seeds of their origin

Cultured and fermented foods complete the metaphor, with recipes and methods passing across time and distance, evolving by region and generation.

Kelly recreates ancient vessels that hold cultured and fermented foods.   Amphorae for fish sauce and wines, kimchee pots and soy bottles. Salt glazed crocks and jugs for ales, buttermilk, or cheese...and cob - earth ovens.

Kelly loves clay, and potters; I love invention and innovation, challenge and the sharpening of skills through practice and critique.  The only thing better than teaching clay  to newcomers, is helping established and experienced potters to try new skills, fine tune their work, take risks, and push themselves to a new level of excellence.

Utilizing a potter’s wheel my pots are formed and altered.  With each piece, I draw an image that compliments or contrasts the pattern I have carved into black slip.  I then hand paint glaze on each piece, which creates textures and color variations.  With each piece sold I hope to enhance my customer’s day-to-day life.
