Put two Raku artists
together and what you get is a learning friendship as colorful as
the Raku pottery they create.
John Wrenn and Judy Geerts met over nine years ago at Ox-Bow,
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s
summer artist’s colony.
John was a visiting artist and Judy was a
ceramics student. What
began as a student-teacher relationship has evolved to the showcase of dramatic work that you see
today.
Raku is a
firing method taken from a 16th century Japanese process
in which the piece is removed glowing hot from a
2000° kiln and placed into combustibles. The resulting smoke and flame create a serendipitous display
of vivid color on copper patina and unique
carbon patterns on a piece’s unglazed areas.
Raku is capricious. The blazing colors have a
mind of their own and there is just so much the
artist can do to guide them in the right direction.
But the hard work, dedication and inspiration that John and
Judy build into their individual pieces isn’t
capricious at all. And
what they create from the flames is a blend of
science and color built on the art that they love.

A one day hands-on figure
building and throwing workshop. Students will get right to
work; slabs of clay will be pre-prepped so you can get into
the hands-on part. Judy will demonstrate the art of how
to build figurative sculptures. John will assist
students in throwing techniques. This opportunity gives
students an opportunity to work hands-on with two award winning
artists.
The workshop will
also offer insight into how these artists formed their friendship
and how it influences their art.
